2021 SLIM’S FISHING DERBY
FEBRUARY 13 & 14, 2021
To say this year was a success would be an understatement. Cold, clear weather and thick ice made conditions favorable this year. 520 registrations was far and away more than we could have imagined. Our processes had changed to adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic. Every single participant at the weigh-in followed our rules and the state mandates, with not one complaint. Given the events of the past year, I couldn’t have imagined this to be so successful, and without issue. Fish were brought in from ponds all over Hancock County, some ponds that had never before been represented at our derby. In all, there were 80 fish brought in, and half were kids under 16. As in the past, we gave a free trap to each kid who brought in a fish to weigh, for as long as our supplies held out. We are happy to see so much of the next generation taking advantage of this great Maine resource. In all, we gave out more than $4000 in prizes and cash awards to 40 participants, including two lifetime fishing licenses. Because of the large turn-out, generous donors, and our amazing sponsors, Slims Fishing Derby was able to raise $7000 for the Jimmy Douglass Memorial Scholarship fund. We thank you all, and look forward to seeing you again in 2022!!
